What I Wish I Knew Right After My Celiac Diagnosis

Getting diagnosed with celiac disease can feel overwhelming at first. There may be relief in finally having answers, but also sadness, stress, and a lot of questions. What I wish I knew right away is that it does get easier.

Gluten is not only in bread and pasta. It can also hide in sauces, seasonings, medications, and shared kitchen tools, so avoiding cross-contact matters too. I also wish I knew healing takes time. Going gluten-free does not always make you feel better overnight, and that is okay.

It is normal to grieve the changes that come with diagnosis. Missing favorite foods and old routines does not make you ungrateful. It just means your life has changed. What helped most was focusing on simple, naturally gluten-free foods like rice, potatoes, eggs, fruit, vegetables, and plain proteins -Hey! Don’t forget the gluten-free spices ;)-

I also learned that asking questions at restaurants is necessary, not rude, and that mistakes can happen while you are learning. Most of all, I wish I knew that gluten-free life can still be joyful, delicious, and full.

A celiac diagnosis changes things, but it can also be the start of feeling better, getting stronger, and learning how to truly care for your body.
